Chapter 12

“That must be the Client,” I whispered. “Let’s get him.”

The Ender King put his hand in front of me. “No. We don’t know what is waiting for us in there.”

“What should we do, Daddy?”

The King stood silently for a moment. This was perhaps the most consequential command he would issue during his entire life.

“We’ll go in there and see what we see. Ready your weapons to strike immediately, but no one attacks unless I give the order.” The Ender King turned and glared at me. He thrust a finger in my face. “No one.”

I sneered and nodded. “Yeah, sure.”

“I’m serious, Jimmy. No violence unless I say so.”

I hunched my shoulders. “I told you. I heard.”

“Follow me then.”

We entered the door and once our eyes adjusted to the bright light we saw that it was coming from torches. Well, not torches exactly, something shaped like a torch. Instead of emitting the warm, reddish light like torches in my dimension, they gave off a cold, menacing white-blue light.

The room itself was quite spectacular. It had a domed ceiling, curving in from the top of the walls, beginning about thirty blocks above the floor. The peak of the dome must have been fifty blocks high. The room itself was made of dark stone, probably obsidian or something similar. There was a simple wooden desk at the far end of the room. Several doors were inset into the walls. All the doors were shut.

To the side of the desk, a dogged-headed creature wearing black and red robes stood with her arms crossed over her chest. On the opposite side of the desk, crumpled on the floor, was Xander. I had no idea what had been done to him, but I was sure it hadn’t been pleasant. As we entered, he glanced up briefly. I nodded to him, hoping to communicate that his family was safe. He responded with a painful smile before leaning back down.

Behind the desk, there was a stout wooden chair. In the chair, a large black-cloaked figure sat, a hood pulled over its head. Once our entire force had entered the room, the figure raised its left hand and flicked its wrist. The door slammed shut behind us.

“Let Xander go,” I shouted.

The Ender King looked at me and pointed his finger in my face. I narrowed my eyes and shut up.

The figure behind the desk stood up. It was tall, at least as tall as the Ender King, maybe a head taller. It walked around the back of the desk, past the anthropomorphic dog creature. It strode confidently, but slowly, until it was standing in front of the desk. It reached up and with black, taloned hands, removed the hood from its head.

We let out a collective gasp. Before us stood the Client himself. As Xander had described, he looked very much like the Noble Dark One. In fact, had the light in this room been dimmer, I might have mistaken him for the Noble Dark One. The Client had
